Octopus Wand Hand Carved from Dark & Light Walnut - 10.25" Natural Tung Oil Finish

I carved this wand by hand using a mini 6” lathe, a Dremel and various carving blades. I sanded it down to a 1500grit and finished with a coat of Natural Tung Oil. The colors you see are the natural wood – no stain was added. This is the 2nd wand I’ve made and will definitely not be my last!

This piece was challenging and a lot of fun to carve. To make the tip dark walnut, I bored a small hole into the tip and the light walnut, made a tiny poplar dowel and attached them with wood glue before sanding (see picture). This makes the two pieces permanently attached. For the octopus, I bored into the bottom so I could insert the light walnut piece into the octopus arms. Sanding this piece took a long time with those 8 tentacles.

My passion is creating art – mostly wood carving and drawings and usually macabre themed. I’ve been drawing since a child but only started wood carving in late 2020 and it has become one of my obsessions. I’m happy to share some of my work here on Etsy as people around me have encouraged me to do for so long. Hi Mom! Haha.
